Annual Meeting 2008
Annual Trinity Parish Meeting
The parish gathered for its annual meeting, Sunday, January 20. Only one service
was held, at 9:15 a.m., and the congregation moved from the church next door to
Irving Hall for brunch, which was followed by the meeting.
Reports from the Rector, Treasurer and Senior Warden are required by Canon 18 to
be presented at the annual meeting. These were presented in person, as were reports
from the chairs of Stewardship and Search committees. Reports from various parish
programs and committees were presented in writing. All of these reports are available
at the Parish Office for those who did not get a copy at the annual meeting.
The Rev. David A. Powers, Interim Rector, reported on the Vestry Retreat held
January 11-12, as part of the preparation for a healthy transition to the next rectorship.
Five tasks were identified: Coming to terms with the history of the congregation and its
relationships with previous clergy; Discovering Trinity’s special identity; Dealing with
shifts in leadership roles; Renewing and reworking relationships with the Diocese; and
Building commitment to the leadership of the new rector.
Senior Warden Michael Turnipseed discussed the many changes that Trinity
experienced in 2007, including those among the clergy and staff. The changes included
the retirement of The Rev. S. Albert Kennington as Rector, the resignation of The Rev.
Laurie Brock as curate to become an assistant rector in Baton Rouge, the retirement of
Sexton Richard Smith and Parish Secretary Cathy Williams. Amos Kidd was hired as
the new sexton and Youth Minister Diana Dunn is serving as interim secretary. Michael
said the Vestry had formed an Organizational Committee to help get things done
during the transition period. With the changes came new experiences, including a
program on time and talent, a bluegrass mass and the forming of a Search Committee.
Treasurer Robbie Baker reported on the state of finances for the parish, noting a
projected shortfall for the year. He asked Stewardship Chair Jason Weekley to report
on the Stewardship Campaign. Jason noted that those who had pledged on average
increased their pledges and new pledges had been received. However, there were
fewer pledges compared to last year. As a result, there was less pledged. He said the
Vestry had authorized an opportunity for parishioners to increase their existing
pledges to meet the projected shortfall (a pledge form can be found on page 3).
Search Committee Chair David Quittmeyer gave a report on the activities of that
committee. Responses to the Parish Profile survey numbered 111, and he noted the
results in his report. A sub-committee has begun work on the Parish Profile. The
Search Committee will soon be accepting applications and suggestions for the new
rector. David also reminded everyone of the need for confidentiality.
Anne Gill reported on the state of the Children’s Center, noting that there has been
an increase of children enrolled. There was change in the Children Center as well with
Cindy Wegener retiring as director. Kelley Parker is now the director of the Mothers
Day Out Program, while Betsi Turner continues as Director of the Pre-School Program.
Six parishioners were nominated to fill five three-year terms on the Vestry. After
one ballot, Julie Castle, John Cherry, Steve Flukinger, Steve Mussell and Melissa Wold
were elected. Nettie Robertson was also nominated. Outgoing Vestry members Anne
Gill, David Jeffries, Vivian Maitland, Trey Oliver and Mark Pitre served as ballot
tabulators.
